Bikers & leather go together like, well, bikers & leather! Having infiltrated the biker scene by way of military gear, most notably the thick ultra-masculine leather jackets favoured by many WW2 Air Force pilots, the BLJ (black leather jacket) & accompanying black leather jeans constitute the archetypal, quintessential protective riding gear for all serious motorcyclists everywhere as well as the ultimate fashion-fuelled statement & status symbol of raw rebellion - always has been, always will be, often supplemented by denim, but never replaced by it. For any teenage male, but especially one attracted to motorbikes & the biker lifestyle, getting your first BLJ is very much a rite of passage.
For when you put it on, experiencing its unique texture and smell, whether brand-new or well-worn pre-loved, and then go out in it for the first time, whether already on a motorbike or just strutting your stuff down your local high street or through the shopping mall, you know that you've finally arrived, manhood & motorcycling are irresistibly beckoning, childhood is but a memory now, the sound of rolling thunder, not to mention your pulsating heartbeat, filling your ears. You're gonna be a biker, a biker clad in a BLJ (often customised with studs, badges & chains by its owner) & black leather jeans (ok, ok, faded denim jeans are acceptable too), the die is cast.
So, as it recently occurred to me that I've never devoted a gallery to this both practical & iconic second skin for bikers, here's one now, containing various pictures that have appeared in previous of my blog's galleries (including a few fantasy-themed ones), together with some brand-new pix, celebrating black leather bikers in all of their enigmatic, charismatic, uber-rebellious pomp & swagger!
