Extending the middle finger upwards from an otherwise closed fist as an insult or as a means of telling someone in no uncertain terms to go away, and nowadays known as giving the finger or flipping the bird (with the latter term for this gesture being particularly common in the USA), is by no means a modern invention. On the contrary, it dates back around 2500 years, to ancient Greece, where it was intended to represent the phallus, hence the reason why even today it is still considered extremely offensive, even obscene, in polite society. But what has any of this to with my biker art blog? I'm glad that you asked!
When creating the images for my recent gallery devoted to bikers & leather (click here to view it), one of the video clips prepared for me by various AI image-generation programs presented a biker standing in front of a tree, staring assertively into the camera (i.e. directly at the viewer) & impudently flipping the bird. Needless to say, my verbal prompts contained no such request for any of the generated bikers to perform this gesture, but because it was as amusing as it was unexpected, I decided to include a screenshot from it in the gallery anyway.
A few days later, one of my blog's regular viewers emailed me to tell me how much he'd laughed when he saw it, and said that an entire gallery devoted to bikers giving the finger would be incredibly funny. Given that this gesture is certainly not unknown within biker culture (as a longstanding biker myself, I can definitely vouch for that!), and also given that the so-called silly season currently prevails here in Britain, I decided to do away with decorum just this once & let in a little levity instead. So here is an entire - and entirely irreverent - gallery of bikers, mostly of the rough & ready rebellious kind, putting to succinct but effective use what the Romans referred to as the digitus impudicus ('shameless finger'). Moreover, as you will have seen directly above the present paragraph, this time I've also included the actual afore-mentioned video clip of the assertive biker flipping the bird, not just the screenshot from it (which I've now re-used here as this present gallery's opening picture, because it did after all inspire the latter's creation). Those of a prudish persuasion should look away now!
