They wear black leather jackets and either black leather jeans or faded denim jeans and they ride motorbikes, but that is where similarities between the Street Wolves and other urban biker gangs end. Frequenting a certain fairly large American town that does not wish to be named for fear of inciting reprisals of the most terrifying kind, the Street Wolves are never seen by day, only appearing during the evening when the town's clubs, bars, restaurants, cafes, cinemas, and other night-life entertainment are in full swing, and also, tellingly, when the local beggars, destitutes, junkies, drunks & other lost souls materialise, squatting or lying dejectedly upon the sidewalks or in their gutters, pitifully regaling passers-by in the hope of soliciting some cash to purchase whatever fix they need to get through another 24 hours. And here, too, is where the Street Wolves can be found, like dark leather-clad shadows stalking the side streets and alley ways - but never together. Uniquely for any biker gang - or any gang of any kind - they are never seen together, only singly. So no-one knows how many of them there are, but they are all sufficiently similar not only in their biker gear but also in facial features for the town's locals to suspect that they are not just gang brothers but also blood brothers.
Many suoperstitions have arisen regarding the uncanny Street Wolves, not least of which is the persistent albeit officially unproved belief that they are somehow responsible for the sudden, frequent, never-explained disappearance of vagrants from the town's byways. Since the Street Wolves first appeared here out of nowhere just over a year ago, many long-familiar drop-outs have inexplicably but irrefutably vanished from this town, leaving no trace behind that they had ever existed, except for the memories of them as recalled by kind citizens who used to give them money or food to sustain them in their sad plight.
Even more radical are claims that the Street Wolves are lupine in more than mere monikers. On more than one occasion, a reveller has exited one of the pubs or clubs and has almost literally bumped into a Street Wolf santering by, and when subsequently recalling the too-close-for-comfort encounter to friends or colleagues has sworn not only that he was sober but also that the Street Wolf's face & head were more than a little canine in feature, with long pointed ears, an abundance of grey hair swept sharply back off his brow that rendered his visage unequivocally wolf-like, and was also sporting long sharp claws instead of fingernails. Sometimes the Street Wolf has allegedy even curled up his top lip and snarled at the petrified reveller just like a savage dog would have done, before swiftly disappearing into the evening shadows.
So who - or what - are the Street Wolves? Where did they come from? When - if ever - are they leaving this town in search of new territory to terrify & horrify? And are they truly responsible somehow for the steady stream of vanishing vagrants here? One longstanding but exceedingly covert investigator of these reputedly malign bikers but who has no intention whatsoever of making his name or investigations public has pointed out succinctly (and pertinently?) that wolves of any kind will always select fresh meat over rotting scavenged carrion if the opportunity arises, and to achieve the greatest chance of success they will therefore target the most vulnerable individuals as potential prey victims - and who are more vulnerable than the homeless, abandoned & unprotected, those unloved flotsam & jetsam in human form who eke out a rudimentary existence on the streets and in the alley ways of big towns like this one? Might it be more apt, then, to refer to the Street Wolves not as a gang but as a pack? I'll say no more, but will leave you instead with that disturbing train of thought to ponder over as you peruse this gallery depicting the sinister Street Wolves in all of their stark black leather menace & mystery.
