HAPPY DAYS WITH BIKERS FROM THE 50S & FONZIE FACSIMILES

What better time to be a biker, especially an American one, than the uber-stylish 1950s? That golden age of Elvis & rock'n'roll, James Dean & Marlon Brando, black leather jackets & levis, quiffs & DAs, soda pop & sneakers, teenage romance & trauma, and Harleys - a vista of gleaming chrome resounding with deep-throated rolling thunder as a rally of bikers rode by, sending clouds of dusr skyward as their powerful machines churned up the highways and byways of urban & rural Midwest America.

As a youngster, all of this and so much more was represented for me in a veritable time capsule by that wonderful 50s-based American TV sitcom Happy Days, created by Gerry Marshall and originally broadcast by the American TV channel ABC from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s. Its immense popularity was thanks above all of course to the charismatic character that soon became its most iconic, breakout-to-standout star - a certain rebellious yet good-hearted biker named Arthur Fonzarelli, but best known to everyone as The Fonz, or Fonzie, oozing with swagger, style & sex appeal, and played superby by American actor Henry Winkler. He had also played a not-too-dissimilar character, Butchey, in the 1974 cult movie The Lords of Flatbush - a personal favourite of mine, again set in th 1950s, and which directly influenced me to go out a fair few years later and purchase a Harley after watching amid a swirling haze of hero-worship & envy another of its characters, Perry King's Chico, riding one majestically around the Flatbush neighbourhood in Brooklyn, NYC, sometimes with his girlfriend as pillion. But I digress...!

And so, here is my much humbler yet no less sincere tribute to those long-bygone but never-forgotten teenage-cherished times, the Fabulous Fifties, and also to their personification - their veritable incarnation -  in biker form, the Fonz, Aaaaaaay!!!

(NB - Needless to say, but I'll say it anyway, those Fonz-inspired pix created for and now duly showcased in this gallery are NOT real and they do NOT depict the real Henry Winkler as the Fonz.
