The year was 1974, I was 14 years old, and a day before the Derby, one of England's five prestigious horse-racing Classics (and only for three-year-old stallions in the case of the Derby), a group of us at secondary school decided that just for fun we would each choose a different horse from the running list, and see if any of them duly won when the Derby was run the following day. I had - and have - no knowledge of horse-racing, form, etc, so my choice of horse was based upon nothing more than the fact that I liked his name, Snow Knight. It turned out that he had never won a major race, and the odds on him winning the Derby were somethihg like 70/1 - in short, he was a rank outsider. All of my friends laughed at me for choosing such a loser - until, a day later, and defying all the odds and every expectation, Snow Knight duly won the Derby!
At that time, I was trying my very amateur hand at writing a fantasy novel, and the name of my Derby-winning horse inspired me to create a mystical character named the Snow Knight to include in it. Sadly, however, I never did get around to expanding my embryonic story into something worth preserving, and after a second, equally unsatisfactory attempt a few years later, I discarded my novel's manuscript - but the Snow Knight remained inside my mind, craving for release as a fully-fledged fantasy character. And now, a mere 51 years since that dramatic Derby day, when the horse whose name inspired my creation of him won that famous race, the Snow Knight has indeed come into being, but with one major change from my original concept of him.
