As a child, two of my favourite novels were those of the late British children's author Roald Dahl (1916-1990) that featured Willy Wonka, the iconic owner of a fantastical chocolate factory, and which is equipped with a huge glass elevator that takes him on an extraordinary voyage in the second novel; these two books are Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964) and Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator (1972).
I also loved (still do) the original fantasy film musical version, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (with songs co-written by Leslie Bricusse & Anthony Newley), released in 1971 & based upon the first novel (to my knowledge, no film version of the second one has been produced so far). In this movie, Willy Wonka is played to great acclaim by Gene Wilder, and whereas in the books he is a fairly jovial cove, Wilder portrayed him as a much more enigmatic, eccentric, decidedly mercurial & ever-so-slightly camp character, wearing a distinctive purple & yellow outfit that is every bitas colourful as his personality.
The camp factor was increased in the 2005 movie remake, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, in which Johnny Depp takes on the role of Wonka, who is portrayed here as a decidedly oddball ossity in terms of his behaviour, and also somewhat reminiscent of the late Michael Jackson in outward appearance. (In 2023, a third movie was released, simply entitled Wonka, and featuring Timothee Chalomet in the title role, which provides a back story for this hitherto-cryptic character, but I haven't watched it so far, though I definitely plan to do so.)
Much preferring Wilder's version of Willy Wonka (no offence, Johnny!), I've been pondering over the possibility of creating a gallery in which his Wonka character's camp aspect is turned up to 11 (Spinal Tap fans will understand this reference!), together with those of his mini-human Oompa-Loompa helpers. Happily, just such a scenario exists on Biker Earth, home to Willy Wonka's hitherto-obscure fourth cousin nine times removed - a confectionery-creating biker named Billy Bonkers, who is ably assisted in his very own steampunk-styled candy factory by a seemingly limitless number of mostly full-sized leather-clad motorcyclists known as the Upsy-Daisy Bikers, and whose camp credentials are even more emphatic than his own.
So now, making their hilarious debut in our own Earth via this multi-coloured & overtly OTT gallery of goofish goonery, here are Billy Bonkers, his candy factory & his affectionate, ever-loyal Upsy-Daisy Bikers (plus a one-off appearance to look out for of Billy alongside his identical twin Bolly), in an equally affectionale pictorial parody of Dahl's beloved chocolatier, as depicted in a number of different styles by a number of different AI image-generation programs.
(NB - It should go without saying, but I'll say it anyway, that the characters & scenes portrayed in this gallery's images have no official link whatsoever to those of Dahl. Nor are they intended to represent in any way, or be in any way mistaken for, those of Dahl; they were merely inspired by them, nothing more. Needless to say, I most certainly do not claim any copyright or financial, commercial link, or infer anywhere that I do, re his novels' characters & plots. In short, this gallery is simply a satirical spoof of them, comparable to the Harvard Lampoon's novel Bored of the Rings (1969), inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy novel trilogy The Lord of the Rings.)
